MediaTek to Spend US$200 Million on New R&D Center in India

MediaTek plans to invest US$200 million to build a second R&D center in Bengaluru, India, in addition to its existing one in Noida, making the continent its largest operation base outside China, reported Taiwan's Economic Daily News on August 22. The R&D center will house around 500 research personnel and provide wireless communications and home entertainment solutions tailored to Southeast Asian consumers and the Indian market. With strong domestic growth in smartphones, PCs, and TVs, India is eager to develop its domestic semiconductor industry. According to India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA), the country on average spends around US$7 billion on IC chips annually, with a prospect to reach US$50 billion in 2020.
